Midtown: Where Are They Now? [30 Jul 2010|11:56pm]

Band: Midtown

Who were they?: Before New Jersey became a hotbed for mainstream emo acts, Midtown were a group of suburban teenagers attending Rutgers University, alongside the members of Thursday. However instead of focusing on the political and personal rage that powered their one-time scenemates, Midtown pioneered a brand of pop-inspired emo rock far before that genre was particularly profitable.

After putting out a handful of small, independent releases the band signed to Drive-Thru Records in the early ’00s and released now beloved albums like 2002’s Living Well Is The Best Revenge. They followed that with their major-label debut, Forget What You Know, which contained one of the most un-emo sentiments ever on it.

During the song “Is It Me, Is It True?” lanky frontman Gabe Saporta (pictured above with members of New Found Glory) opined, “Sex is old and boring.” Which, presumably, was not true if you weren’t getting any. The band played the Warped Tour multiples times, starting with their initial run in 2000.

Memorable moments: “On our first Warped Tour we were all really young,” recounts the band’s former drummer Rob Hitt. “We didn’t know anybody and I was freaking out because when you’re growing up people like The Bouncing Souls aren’t your peers. They’re your idols.

“Then all of the sudden, right before we’re about to play our first show across this field, we hear, ‘Everybody, I want you to go over to that stage right now and watch a band called Mitown’—and it was the guys from Anti-Flag! We were these little emo pop-punk kids and the coolest band on the Warped Tour were yelling to go watch us and we couldn’t believe it.”

How did it end?: Shortly after the band released Forget What You Know, Midtown quietly broke up in 2005. Well, sort of. “It’s really weird because I guess we never officially broke up,” Hitt says. “I guess we just kind of faded away. The best way to explain it is if you looked at a graph of our career it peaked at one point and then held steady. But if you’re five years in, and that graph is still holding steady or slipping a little bit, you have to make some hard decisions.

“I think we were unsure of what our label was going to do with us and we were getting older and things didn’t seem to be progressing. So we just took some time off from each other and never came back together again.”

So where are they now?: Midtown bassist/vocalist Gabe Saporta went on to form a little band you might now called Cobra Starship. He lives in Manhattan and can probably be heard on your local pop station every at some point in the next five minutes. He’s also still really tall.

After Midtown broke up drummer Rob Hitt started his own label, I Surrender Records, whose roster includes Valenica and Take Notice. He has also entered the world of artist management and currently represents The Cab, Craig Owens and Four Year Strong.

Midtown guitarist Heath Saraceno joined Senses Faill in 2005 and played on the albums Still Searching and LIfe Is Not A Waiting Room, before leaving the band in 2009. He is currently studying to be an electrician. He also has a pretty rad food blog.

Midtown guitarist Tyler Rann fronts the David Bowie-inspired rock act Band Of Thieves and is a sales rep for Marc Jacobs. Don’t worry Tyler, we won’t tell your employer about the video below.

Final Show [11 Aug 2007|09:28am]

from Indiependent Music:

Us: (hands Midtown album sleeves to Gabe)
Gabe: (pleasantly surprised) Wow, thank you so much for having these albums.
Us: So will Midtown be coming back for a reunion show or something?
Gabe: We'll be doing a final show.
Us: Final?
Gabe: Yes. We're going to play a final show together. I've done the best three records of my life and this (leafs through, picks out "Forget What You Know" and waves it) is probably the best I've ever done, - even better than the Cobra Starship album- and when a band has done three great records, a fourth one kinda spoils the band legacy. So three great records - that's it. I'm done.

In The Songs Lyrics [27 May 2006|03:31am]

Title: In The Songs
Artist: Midtown
Album: Living Well Is The Best Revenge
Year: 2002

Remember just two years ago
When our bands were playing house shows

Were fighting for
To make a change
To live our lives the way we dreamed
Despite what they might say, yeah

Remember how we struggled, though
Remember nights we spent on hard wood floors

Were fighting for
To make a change
To live our lives the way we dreamed
Despite what they might say, yeah

You're there when I fall
You'd help me be strong
Even when I lost my faith

We're standing so tall
We made it through it all
We will keep it going strong
'Cause I feel it in the songs

To all my friends from around the way
Much respect!

We owe you dues
We've got your back
You've got our's too

We'll be there
Should you fall
And I just wanted you to know
You can always count on me

You're there when I fall
You'd help me be strong
Even when I lost my faith

We're standing so tall
We've made it through it all
We will keep it going strong
Cause I feel it in the songs

You're there when I fall
You'd help me be strong
You're there when I fall
And we've made it through it all

You're there when I fall
You'd help me be strong
even when I lost my faith

We're standing so tall
We've made it through it all
We will keep it going strong
'Cause i feel it in the songs

In the songs, wooooooo!

Hi guys.

I know this doesn't exactly pertain to Midtown but I love them both and I hope you do too...

I've been working on a project for Punchline for over a year. I'm going to finish it but I need some help. So if You could go http://community.livejournal.com/punchkids/ there and vote, it'd be awesome. If you'd like to help, that'd be awesome too.

So...sorry for wasting your time if you don't like them. Otherwise, I hope everyone's day is going to go better than mine (I have two finals today).

i'm posting this bad boy all over today.

Rob Hitt in AP Magazine

"They Say" (about mp3 vs. cds)

"what makes a CD special is listening to it all the way through with the transitions and the separation of space and negative time in between the tracks. Some bands but short songs or samples in that negative space, and that space does not get burned when converting the track to a MP3. Sometimes, bands fade tracks on a CD so the begining of one track overlaps the end of the previous, but the track ends adruptly when you're listening to the MP4. So until I catch up with technology (or technology catches up with me), I'll still be a fan of CD's. Although, I still love my iPod...

there is also a pretty sweet picture of him.
